A Brief History of Bookmakers

Since the 1400s, the term “bookmaker” or “bookie” has been used to refer to a person who maintains a book of bets. Bookmakers keep a record of bets placed and calculate odds. Originally called “oddsmakers”, during the 1790s, Harry Ogden was one of the earliest recorded to attract bettors with a system of odds from the Newmarket Heath racecourse in the UK. His system would incentivize bettors to place bets on underdogs by offering additional returns as a reward.

Betting shops have been present in London, UK, since the early 1800s. However, in 1853, the Act for the Suppression of Betting Houses was passed, which forced bookmakers underground or into the hands of criminal organizations. A century later, in 1960, the Betting and Gaming Act was introduced. This act led to a boom in the number of high-street betting shops in the UK, with over 10,000 opening in 1961 alone.

At that time, horse racing and greyhound racing were the most common sports for betting shops. This surge of new establishments transformed high streets forever. A unique approach compared to the rest of Europe, Britain is one of just a few on the continent to licence high-street betting shops. Not until the post-millennial era have countries like Spain and Germany followed suit, somewhat encouraged by the rising popularity of online casinos.

Horse RacingThe 1960 reform saw the rise of big-name English bookies, Ladbrokes, William Hill, Betfred and BetVictor. Towards the late 90s, these bookmakers started accepting bets over the phone and online. In 1996, Intertops.com accepted the first online bet from a Finnish bettor, who placed a bet on Tottenham Hotspur to beat Hereford United. Four years later, William Hill launched its offshore telephone betting service in January 2000, following the launch of its internet betting service in 1998.

Dissecting Sports Betting

From the proverbial handshake to the online betting slip, bookmakers have moved with the times. In today’s online world, bookmakers take bets not just on major competitions, but also on lesser-known sports like Beach Volleyball and Bandy. In addition, most online sportsbooks contain dedicated Virtual Sports and E-Sports sections. Inspired by real sporting events and teams, Virtual Sports are fantasy-based events and leagues where the results are determined by a Random Number Generator (RNG).

Enjoyed by millions worldwide, E-sports are video game competitions and leagues. In 2023, T1 emerged victorious over Welbo Gaming during the League of Legends World Championship (Worlds) held at the Gocheok Sky Dome in South Korea. The event was attended by 18,000 people and watched online by more than 6.4 million viewers. In short, you can place bets on almost anything at online casinos with sportsbooks, from international competitions to the likelihood of snowfall at Christmas. When placing a bet, most fall into the ‘spread’ and ‘odds’ categories.

What is Spread Betting?

Spread betting is a wager based on a range or “spread” of outcomes, such as a team winning by two or more goals. The spread is displayed as a points range. Also known as a Points Spread, the bettor picks the winner or loser based on the spreads on offer. The favoured team or opponent is listed next to the “-” symbol, while the underdog is shown next to the “+” symbol. For instance, in football, a favourite could be offered with a spread of -2, which means they would need to win by two goals or more for the bettor to win. Similarly, the underdog could have a spread of +2, giving them a two-goal starting advantage.

Fixed-Odds Betting

Odds betting does not have a spread of outcomes and is results-based on somebody winning or losing. Owing to the global reach of online casinos most will allow players to switch between their preferred formats for displaying odds. The three most common odds formats are fractional, decimal and American. All tell a similar story but in a different way:

  • Fractional Odds (British): Displayed as a fraction, a fractional odd shows the ratio of awarded profit next to a certain stake. For example, a fractional odd of 2/1 will return £2 for every £1 staked, meaning a £1 bet would payout £3 (£2 profit + the original £1 stake)
  • Decimal Odds (European/Continental): Decimalised odds display the amount you will win for staking €1. For example, a decimal odd of 3.00 will return €3 for every €1 staked. To convert a fractional odd to decimal, divide the first figure by the second and add 1.00, e.g. 2/1 becomes 2 ÷ 1 + 1 = 3.00
  • Moneyline Odds (American/U.S.): Moneyline odds use a ‘+’ sign for the underdog and a ‘-‘ sign for the favourites. It is important to remember that with moneyline odds, + moneyline indicates the amount you can win for a $100 stake, whereas a – moneyline indicates the amount you need to stake to win $100. By comparison, 2/1 fractional odds or 3.00 decimal odds would be shown as +200 moneyline odds.

Different Sports Bet Types

In addition to the various odds formats, there are several common bet types:

  • Single: A bet placed on a single outcome, such as win or lose
  • Double: Two different bet selections combined into one bet
  • Treble: Three different bet selections combined into one bet
  • Accumulator aka Parlay: Four or more different bet selections combined into one bet. To win an Accumulator, all of your chosen bets must win
  • Trixie: A Trixie is a combination bet made from three Doubles and a Treble. In horse racing, an example of a Trixie would consist of picking three doubles from different events. Only two Doubles would need to win to get a return. Should all three selections win, the Treble bet element of the Trixie maximises returns
  • Yankee: Similar to a Trixie, the Yankee consists of 11 bets from four selections. For example, six doubles, four trebles and an Accumulator make a Yankee
  • Heinz: A Heinz consists of 57 bets across six selections. Like the Trixie and Yankee, two or more selections must win for a return, and the bet contains several Accumulators
  • Super Heinz: 120 bets from seven selections make a Super Heinz, which includes Doubles, Trebles, and several Accumulators
  • Goliath: The Goliath contains eight selections totalling 247 bets, consisting of Doubles, Trebles and several Accumulators
  • Totals aka Over/Under: A bet placed on the total number of points, runs or goals scored in a game
  • Lucky 15: Fifteen bets make up a Lucky 15, which includes Singles, Doubles, Trebles and an Accumulator
  • Lucky 31: Thirty-one bets containing Singles, Doubles, Trebles and several Accumulators
  • Lucky 63: Sixty-three bets comprised of Singles, Doubles, Trebles and several Accumulators
  • Double Chance: A wager placed on two of the three fixed outcomes – win, lose or draw

In-Play Betting

In-play betting is also known as live or in-game betting. It involves placing bets on an outcome while the event is taking place. In-play bets can be made based on fixed outcomes or a spread, and they keep enthusiastic punters glued to the screen of their sporting event as the action unfolds. These types of bets are placed during the event, including during extra time and penalty shootouts in games like football and hockey. Furthermore, live betting features dynamic offers not usually found in results-based betting, such as points scored in extra time. It’s important to note that in-play betting odds are volatile and can change quickly.

Live Atmosphere

Sports Betting & Online Casinos

As gambling has evolved, so too have online casinos. At the same time, the number of casinos continues to grow along with an increasing need to distinguish themselves from the competition. As a result, most online casinos feature sportsbooks or are planning to do so in the future. To gain an edge, sportsbook platforms incorporate innovative features such as personalised bet building, customisable user interfaces, and localised sporting events. These exclusive features can help win over new customers and keep bettors loyal.

What’s more, the online casino welcome bonus is no longer reserved for casino games only. Often, the modern online casino caters for sports bettors as well as casino enthusiasts, enticing players with a choice of Casino, Live Casino and Sportsbook welcome offers. Furthermore, online casino promotions have evolved to ensure sports bettors stay loyal, incorporating sports betting deals into busy promotional calendars.

Sportsbook Promotions

As sports betting has grown, so has the demand for sports betting promotions. To compete, the modern online casino must cater to all tastes with an ever-expanding range of content. The same can be said of online sportsbooks, which must deliver deals daily to meet player needs. What’s more, major sporting events and seasonal occasions encourage special deals in celebration.

As a result, sportsbook promotions are not hard to find. From Acca Boosts on footballs World Cup to Free Bets on New Year’s Eve. Sportsbook promotions can be found at online casinos worldwide, on TV, in newspapers and magazines, and on social media. Odds Boosts, Profit Boosts, Bonus Bets, Insurance Bets, Cashback, Reload Bonuses, No Deposit Bonuses, and more exist to discourage new and existing users from straying.

Sportsbook Platforms

Like peas in a pod, online sportsbooks may seem somewhat similar to one another, not only due to their logical structure but also because so many are the software solutions of sports betting specialists. Implementing a white-label sportsbook or modular solution can save casino operators time and money. Sportsbook platform providers eliminate the need to build and maintain a service. Furthermore, partnering with an established sportsbook specialist can help casino operators optimise returns by placing their trust in a proven product.

There are several sportsbook platform providers available, including Kambi, BetConstruct, SoftSwiss, BtoBet, Playtech, SoftSwiss, and EveryMatrix. While some of these providers specialize in sports betting, many offer complete igaming solutions, modular add-ons, and even customized platform development. Additionally, casino owners can take advantage of back-office software solutions, which include detailed bettor analytics and customer relationship management (CRM)tools.

The Future of Sports Betting

As subscription-based streaming services move towards showcasing major sporting events, expect to see more interactive ways for fans to engage. This includes community-based social experiences through live chat services and in-app sports betting. Furthermore, with the rising popularity of sports betting and online streaming combined, new betting markets will continue to emerge from within these platforms.

Community One example is The Netflix Cup by popular media-streaming service Netflix, in which PGA Tour golfers and Formula 1 drivers teamed up on November 14, 2023, for a live tournament at Wynn Golf Club in Las Vegas. The tournament coincided with the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix and was broadcast live for around 250 million subscribers.

In addition, Amazon Prime subscribers can watch the 2024 English Premier League and NFL action on Thursday Night Football. And in a 2023 deal with SportsGrid Network, Amazon added the SportsGrid FAST channel to Freevee and Prime Video. Given the wide reach of services like Netflix and Amazon, introducing in-app wagering to their communities, powered by sports betting networks seems like a probable step forward.

Sports Betting & Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionising the sportsbook experience. From advanced analytics that help punters make informed plays, to personalized sports betting with dynamic odds, AI is changing the game. Today, customer support is powered by advanced chatbots, and casinos use AI to enhance security and prevent manipulation. Player information that used to be the subject of back office weekly reports is being crunched and calculated by AI before spitting out a more tailored betting experience.

AI algorithms calculate odds on the fly at lightning speed, making sportsbooks more dynamic, smarter and faster. At the same time, AI is giving gamblers an edge. The calculated gambler no longer needs to study the form, sift through chunks of historical results, or check the conditions at the local racetrack. On the contrary, the modern bettor leverages AI to calculate the win probabilities of possible outcomes in seconds and provide betting tips.
